S. L. Stark's Work in Progress:
The Temple of Nede trilogy

Where did the inspiration for the Nede trilogy come from?

While teaching a Greek mythology unit to ninth graders almost a decade ago, my interest in myths and religions grew to an all-consuming, inquisitive passion: why are there so many similarities in religious stories? What are the literal meanings of the metaphor-filled creation stories? What if all religions are right?? As I explored these questions, I began creating a world that combined elements from various religions and developed characters who could best narrate the realities of such a place. It’s been almost 9 years of brainstorming and research at this point!

What is a unique part of your writing routine?

This varies depending on my mood, but lately I’ve been listening to the Last Kingdom soundtrack or Nordic Shamanic chants while writing. There are no lyrics to distract me, and something about the ancient roots of the style allows me to reach my setting/time period better.  Don't knock it 'til you try it!

Even though my story is fantasy, I've done my fair share of research as well. This includes everything from the world’s most popular religions and their traditions to terms for specific horse equipment in the Middle Ages. I even dabbled in some biology and chemistry while researching DNA/genetics and immunity. I've got hundreds of pages of notes from my findings, so part of my routine is trying to organize it all and coming up with new ideas each time.
